Economics Book Club for Teachers
Tucson – Ongoing
An Economics Book Club for teachers of all grades in greater Tucson, founded by the Thomas R. Brown Foundation. Teachers of various grade levels gather to read titles of the group’s selection, discuss the ideas in the books under the facilitation of an AP High School Economics teacher, and share ideas for classroom application. Reading and workshop attendance come with a certificate for 16 professional development hours.
For teachers of all grades. No fee. Pre-registration required.
 
International Economic Summit
Tucson – July 21 & 22, 2009
Offered in cooperation with the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, this workshop is of interest to high school teachers of Social Studies, History, World Studies, Business, and Economics. The workshop teaches how to do a classroom world trade simulation that will teach your students fundamental economic concepts within the context of international trade, and challenge them to think critically about the costs and benefits of trade while exploring the concept of globalization. The simulation is standards-based. The workshop includes a resource kit, 13 individual lesson plans designed for classroom flexibility that flow easily into an existing course or can be a stand-alone unit. The workshop will convene over two consecutive days in Tucson and will have an additional online follow-up.
For teachers of grades 9 -12. No fee. Pre-registration is required.
 
Virtual Economics CD Workshops
Tucson – September 15, 2009 & January 27, 2010.
A lab to introduce participating teachers to the use of the Council on Economic Education’s “Virtual Economics” CD-ROM, with over 1,000 ready-made lessons that enable teachers to integrate economics into their curricula. The lesson plans can be searched by Arizona Standards and concepts, grade level, subject and topic. The CD – a $100 value – is the ultimate resource in economic education. It will be distributed at the workshop, at no charge. Co-sponsored by the Arizona Council on Economic Education (ACEE).
For K – 12 Teachers. No fee. Pre-registration required.
 
Understanding Economics in US History
Tucson – December 2, 2009.
Are you wondering how to meet the mandated Economics Strand in the Arizona Social Studies curriculum? This one-day workshop with companion resource book is designed to enable you to teach familiar history content from a new angle that incorporates economics and will help you and your students acquire an economic way of thinking about American History. The workshop facilitators will focus on model lessons for classroom use. Interactive lessons will feature six principles of economic reasoning applied to key issues in American history. Participants will receive, at no cost to them, a copy of the curriculum guide “Focus: Understanding Economics in US History” – a $50 value – produced by the National Council on Economic Education. The workshop offers recertification credit for teachers. Co-sponsored with the Arizona Council on Economic Education.
For teachers of upper elementary, middle, and high school. No fee. Pre-registration required. 

Global Economics
Tucson – December 8, 2009
A workshop designed to help teachers comply with the Arizona Economics Standards’ Fourth Concept and Student Performance Objectives. The workshop addresses international trade, environment, outsourcing, comparative and absolute advantage, worker and consumer roles in a global economy, exchange rates, trade agreements, and other factors that influence major world patterns of economic activity.
For teachers of grades 7 – 12. No fee. Pre-registration is required.

Ethics and Economics: Teaching the Ethical Foundations of Economics
Tucson – February 28, 2010.
This workshop examines the mutual impact of economics and ethics in such contexts as science, markets, and sweatshops. It will address these and such other issues as markets and morals, and market efficiency and morals. A great teacher resource book will be issued at no charge. Participatory demonstrations will touch on classroom application in such areas as simulations, group decision making and problem solving.
For middle and high school teachers. No fee. Pre-registration required.
 

Lodging Assistance for Attending Arizona Society of Economics Teachers (ASET) Conference
Mesa Community College – February 2010.
Partial funding for lodging the night before the conference is available to Arizona teachers who live outside of MaricopaCounty. Convenient for (but not limited to) those who may be attending the previous day’s ACEE workshop. The Foundation will pay all but $20 of lodging at the conference hotel.
Pre-registration is required.
 
Economic Principles Educate Voters: Focus on Balanced Budget Laws
Tucson – March 17, 2010
A workshop on innovative pedagogy techniques for teaching economics, taught by Amy Cramer, Ph.D., of U of A and Pima Community College. It will use balanced budget laws and their impact as an example of how to present material in a way that will stick in the minds of students.
For middle and high school teachers. No fee. Pre-registration required.

Economic Principles Educate Voters: Focus on the Role of Government
Tucson – June 14, 15, 16, 2010
Another workshop in a series taught by Amy Cramer, Ph.D., of U of A and Pima Community College. It will analyze the impact of government in shaping and modulating the economy through market policies, legislated price ceilings and floors, subsidies, safety regulations, and other activites. The workshop will include examples of how to present material in a way that will stick in the minds of students.
